Flyers; Yeah they still got this.

Last night's Game 4 between the Flyers and the Penguins was tough to watch as a Flyers fan.  I mean, to have 8 unanswered goals scored against you is not an easy thing to watch.  But guess what?  Some days things just don't work out, and that happens with every team. Read more →

Texting while driving, or driving after smoking weed: Which is safer?

Now that a majority of states have put some kind of law into effect regarding texting while driving, it got me thinking. Here is the state of Pennsylvania, there is a $50 fine if you are caught texting while driving. $50!!! That is pathetic, and almost a joke. When someone is texting while operating a motor vehicle, their eyes are NOT ON THE ROAD!!! It's as simple as that. They are deliberately not paying attention to what is going on around them and should be considered “Reckless Driving”.

Now, it is said that people are dangerous when they are behind the wheel after smoking pot, but I think that they are a safer driver than someone that is not paying attention to what is going on around them texting someone. A lot of people would even say that you are more careful, and mindful of your surroundings when you're a little buzzed.

I'm not saying that it is a good idea to get totally ripped and drive around, but I think that the texting while driving law's punishment is a little underwhelming. It is not going to stop people from doing it, even though they should, and I have personally made a conscious effort to get out of the habit. When all is said and done, I would rather be on a road with people that just smoked weed as opposed to people that are not paying attention.

Phillies 2012 Season: Ryan Howard

Well since Howard went down with his Achilles injury to end the Phillies 2011 season, I think most of the fan base was a little worried about the 2012 season.  How long will he be out?  When Howard does return, is he going to be effective?  Or is he going to be ready at all for the 2012 season. After a small setback in February, where an infection delayed his rehab, it looks like Howard should be ready to go by mid-May.  Hopefully he is back by then, whether it be with the Phillies or down in AAA to get back into shape.  And when he does come back, I am hoping that he starts to learn how to be a better hitter.  Nothing is more frustrating than watching Howard consistently strike out on the same pitch: low and outside off-speed pitch. Listen, I don't think that we are ever going to get another season like the one that Howard had in 2007.  That season he deserved a $25 Million/year contract.  But since then, he has just been an average player.  I think if he changes his game a bit, and learns to take the ball the other way, then he will be a much more effective player.  But with a difficult off-season to get anything done, I don't think we will see that Howard this season. I am hoping that Howard comes back and cuts down on the strike outs, and continues to knock runs in.  Having Pence in the line-up all year is going to help, and I think that John Mayberry is going to have a breakout season.  If both of those players have better-than-average seasons, things will only be better for Howard.  But first we need him healthy.

Trayvon Martin

This case has been getting a lot of attention across the country, and rightfully so.  This has been seen as several things: -          A race issue -          Ridiculous laws (Not arresting the gunman) -          Media portraying the entire event inaccurately I’m not sure exactly what happened that day Trayvon was shot to death by George Zimmerman, and the truth is that no one really knows for sure what happened.  I do know that whatever did happen was unfortunate and a kid lost his life. I personally hate when the race card is pulled, and it seems like this is a race thing.  Whenever Al Sharpton comes into the picture, it seems that race is everything. But now that more facts are coming out about the case, it seems like Trayvon was actually beating/punching George Zimmerman before he shot him.  Maybe George Zimmerman really did feel like he could’ve been killed that day, and he felt that he had to defend himself?  Maybe George Zimmerman instigated the whole situation and got himself into that position?  Maybe Trayvon could’ve just kept walking away and gotten home safely? Should someone have been killed that day?  Not at all!  But I don’t think it is the right thing to do to blame it on the victim’s race immediately. Everyone should let all of the facts come out before reacting so strongly.  I personally think that the support that the cities across the country are showing is something special and cool.  But let’s not automatically blame it on race.

Occupy, Recession and B.S.

I took the time last night to sit down and watch the movie "Inside Job", which is about "the systemic corruption of the United States by the financial services industry and the consequences of that systemic corruption."  In other words, it details the reasons why our country is going through a recession. I never really understood what happened that caused this recession, and whenever people tried to explain it to me I just wasn't able to comprehend it all.  This movie really helped make it simple to understand, and I now have a better understanding of what happened. It is absolutely mind-boggling that these CEOs and executives of major financial institutions were able to "con" their consumers.  The amount of money that these people were able to steal and get away with is crazy.  All of the "Occupy" protests were directed at these people, who really do represent the 1%.  Some of these bastards were making hundreds of millions of dollars within a couple years!!!  And they got this money from the general public that trusted these financial institutions with their savings.  These same people haven't been arressted. I definitely think that this is a movie that needs to be seen so that everyone gets a grasp on what caused this recession that we are just starting to get over.  I have a much better understanding of things now, and won't feel out of place when talking about this stuff in a crowd.

Chase Utley Announcement

On Friday I heard that Chase Utley had scheduled a press conference for today, March 25, 2012.  With all of the talk about his injury, and how little progress he has made, I thought that we might have seen Chase play his last game as a Philadelphia Phillie. This would have been bittersweet news.  I have loved watching chase play during his career and really develop into a top 2nd basemen in MLB.  The fact of the matter is that since the Phillies won the World Series in 2008, his production has been fading away and he is making $15 million a year for the next 2 seasons. As it turns out, Chase will not be having any kind of surgery to try and help out his knees.  he will be rehabbing and miss the beginning of the season getting back into "baseball shape".  I'm not bummed that Chase isn't retiring; as long as he gets some production back at the plate.  There was something in me though that was kind of hoping that he was going to announce his retirement today and get his $15 million off of the Phillies payroll. Here's to hoping that Chase gets back to his old self again, and he is able to play a vital role in the Phillies getting back to the World Series.
